The hedonic line receives its name from the society in ancient history known as the Hedonists. The Hedonists believed that life had a single purpose. That purpose was to experience pleasure. So, they developed an entire society and culture around having pleasure all the time. Of course, the idea of basing a society solely on pleasure did not work; which is why the Hedonists did not last. However, this is where the technical name “pleasure threshold” of our brain comes from.
It should be stated, that humans actually do have a pleasure threshold in our brain. When life is normal, our threshold for pleasure is at a normal average position. Thus, we experience pleasure at normal average times that are common to most human beings. Good examples of times we might experience pleasure might include Christmas Eve spent with our family watching an old Christmas movie. Another example could be the moment you arrive at Disney World, ready for a day of fun and excitement.
